Midwest

The following fencers have said that they are planning on attending Midwest High School Championships at Culver, Indiana on January 23rd:
Alec, Claire, Emma J.R., Emma W., Harrison, Laura, Marie, Michaela, Peter, and Jonny

Here is the plan:

We will leave Friday the 22nd at either 5 or 7 pm and fly (yes fly - it turns out to be slightly cheaper or the same price for the small amount of fencers we have attending) to Chicago Midway airport. We will stay at a hotel by the airport that night. A bus (which will be paid for our of our transportation budget) will take us to Culver Saturday morning (118 miles). The first event starts at 10:00 so we won't have to get up too early, plus you can sleep on the bus. We will fence and then take a bus back to Chicago. There are flights out that night, but we're hoping you will fence well and then we would miss our flights, so we are flying out first thing Sunday morning.

Cost - The airfare at this time is around $213.80. - plus baggage fee for your fencing equipment.
You'd pay for your share of hotel. - There are 6 girls and 4 boys. We can squish in room of 3 and 4 or go in 2's, let me know what you want to do. I haven't chosen a hotel yet, but it should be around $100/night for 2 nights/room -
You'll also be responsible for your food.

I need your legal name to book your ticket, you will be billed by SPA for the ticket and hotel. Please respond as soon as possible.

Thanks!

PS - Someone please forward this to Harrison, he has neglected to give me his email address. - Thanks!

Baby Sister Blat

Bob, Big Brother Owen and I are pleased to announce the safe arrival of Sydni Lynn Minci Blat. Her Daddy and her arrived home from China on Christmas Eve. She is 11 months old and making a smooth transition into the Blat household. It's been quite a year for us adopting 2 kids in one calendar year. I'm on adoption leave from teaching until February 18th which takes us almost to the end of the fencing season. It worked out well for us last year, so I'm excited to start practice again in January.

We are excited to see you next week!

JO Qualifiers

JO Qualifiers are on the 6th at MN Sword Club. This is an optional meet and you must be a member of the USFA to participate. If you decide to attend the meet and can fence both cadet and juniors, I would suggest you fence both. At this point Bob and I are not planning on attending this meet. If you are planning on fencing this meet and would like us to coach you there, please let us know by Wednesday, December 2nd.

Thanks!

High School Fencers Only

If you have not let me know if you are planning on attending Midwest High School Championships in Culver Indiana, I need to know by the end of this week.

Thanks!

Team Banquet Date

The date for the team banquet has been changed to 3-2-10 due to a conflict with the Dining Hall. More details will come in February.

Electric Days

After Winter Break, each weapon will fence electrically one day per week.
Monday - Sabre
Tuesday - Foil
Friday - Epee

Most meets occur on Wednesday and Thursday, that is why I did not choose those days, we can use those days as make-up days as needed.

It's That Time of Year Again!

Walk for Animals

Dear Family and Friends,

The 5 of us are walking to support animals this year. This is Owen's first animal walk. Last we raised over $1000 and hope to do the same this year. Donations are due by May 1st, we'll send out a reminder closer to the date. We'll have a pool party this July for everyone who donates. It was a lot of fun last year and we hope to see you all again!

I recently accepted the challenge to raise funds to support Animal Humane Society's 2009 Walk for Animals. This annual event in Golden Valley, MN aids Animal Humane Society's five Twin Cities area facilities and helps support programs serving nearly 40,000 animals per year. This year, the need is as great as it has ever been. Animals also suffer the effects of tough times and this is exactly the time when our commitment must be at its strongest. Please help support me and the animals by contributing generously. For information about the Walk for Animals or the Animal Humane Society and its programs, click here.

It is faster and easier than ever to support this great cause by making your tax-deductible donation online. If you would prefer, you can mail your contribution to me at the address listed below.

Whatever you can give will help - it all adds up! I greatly appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my progress.

Sincerely,

Jenni, Bob, Owen, Murphy and Boomer Blat

Awards

As many of you know Bob and I try to think of a funny award for each fencer. With so many fencers this year we are struggling to think of ideas for some of you. It is also hard to think of ideas when you don't show up to practice very often - we have to know you in order to be able to come up with an award. If you have any appropriate ideas for anyone on the team please email me. If you remember what you got in years past email that to me too, so I don't give you the same award and maybe I can recycle it for someone else.
Thanks!

Your Input Please

We have tried having more individual meets this season, we'd like your feedback as we start planning for next year. Please email me your vote.
A - I prefer to only do team meets and the SPA Invite like last year.
B- I liked the more individual meets and fencing that I had this year, I'd like to do it again.
C - I like having the more individual meets, but I'd like more fencers from other teams to show up.
D- I liked the more fencing this year, but it got kind of expensive and I'd like to find a cheaper way to do it.
E - C & D

Captains for Next Year

We will vote for MVPs, MIPs and Captains at States this year, don't leave until you have filled out your ballot.
If you are in 9-11 grade this year you are eligible to be a captain next year, depending on how the votes round out will determine the number of captains, we've had from 2-6 captains depending on the year.
Captains are leaders and role models for the rest of the team.
Captains are required to attend at least 4 practices a week, no exceptions, even if you are fencing at a club.
Captains must attend all meets and parent's day (they only exception is if the SPA Invite conflicts with a NAC and you are attending the NAC).
Captains must stay the entire team meet to support the team, no excuses.
Captains are responsible for ordering team gear.
Captains are responsible for maintaning the bulletin board downstairs.
Captains are responsible for checking over the practice site at the end of practice and making sure that the electric equipment is away and gathering any gear that has been left.
As always an illness is a valid excuse. Homework, and other school events are not valid excuses.
Being a captain is a lot of extra work, time and responsibilty, if you choose not to be a captain because you know that you can't commit to the job please email me so I can take your name off of the ballot.
It is better for the team for you email me bow out now that to say that you are willing and then let the team down next year.

Thank you to everyone who followed directions and stayed to clean up. Many of you fenced very well and exceeded your expectations for yourself. We did a good job, but we have a lot of work to do if we'd like to win States. We need to have at least 2 fencers in the top 4 of each event and 1 more in the top 8 if we want a chance in winning.
