JO Qualifiers

JO Qualifiers are coming up fast, Sunday December 7th. Go to http://askfred.net/Events/Prereg/prereg.php?tournament_id=6957 to preregister. If this is your first year you don't have to fence this meet, but please stop by to watch and cheer on the team. Please register today, the organizers need to know the final numbers so they can plan to have enough referees and then we don't have to spend the entire day there. You can fence and then leave when you're done. If we have enough team members qualify we can plan a team trip to New Mexico to compete in the Junior Olympics.
Events Scheduled: - Remember you can fence more than one event if you fall into both age catagories.
Cadet and junior events for each weapon and each gender.

Squad Practices

Thank you to everyone who completed the team survey and told me which days you could not attend practice. I am putting the squad schedules together this weekend, I'll email them out to you when they're done. Squad practices will start next week. If you are fencing JO Qualifiers on Sunday the 7th, you may want to come to practice everyday. Our plan for next week is to start with blade drills and let those of you fencing on Sunday use the electrical equipment while the rest of us work on the basics.

E-Mails

I've just spent a very frustrating few hours typing in the emails to the fencing list. Since there are over 50 people signed up for fencing, it's a large list. I send it out BCC, but many of your e-mail providers consider it SPAM and won't let me send it to you. So if you're not getting the team e-mails, email me directly and we'll see if that help matter or just read the blog. I update it as I send out the team email.

T-shirt Contest

We sell t-shirts at the SPA Invitational Meet, I usually design them and I'm out of ideas. Submit your idea to me by December 1st and if it's chosen you'll get a free shirt.
Guidelines - It should be one color on a grey, white or navy background. It should also have a Spartan somewhere - maybe fencing. It should say SPA Invitational and the date somewhere - January 17th, 2009. That's it - the rest is up to you!

We are starting up again!

Bob sent his email, before we could just send one. Hopefully everyone is on this email list. If you don't want to receive the SPA emails any more please let me know. I will email at least once a week so everyone knows what is going on. If you are a fencer, it is your responsibility to check your e-mail, not your parents. Any emergency information will get emailed out, so please check often.
Practice this week starts Monday at 4. Middle school doesn't have school that day, so they don't have practice. Full team practices for the rest of the week. We'll mainly do conditioning and hand out the equipment on Thursday. Our first practice with equipment in on Monday the 24th. We only have practice Monday and Tuesday that week. Up until Thanksgiving everyone will practice everyday - it's only 7 days.
Squad practices will start on December 1st. To help save a tree, I'm going to add the usual team questionare at the end of this email, please fill it out and return it to me by the 21st, so I can plan the practice days.
Our first meet is on, Sunday, December 7th - not very far away. You need to have your equipment, and your USFA membership by that day. If you need another copy of the team expectations and what to buy letter let me know. Everyone, but first years is expected to fence this meet. At these meets, you can fence and then leave when you're done. Only the coaches need to spend the day there. You can register now at www.askfred.net. If you don't know how to do it, ask a friend that does, or bring your laptop to practice and I can help you.
At the mandatory meeting on Saturday we started the treat sign up fo the year. There is a lot of blanks, please let me know what dates you can help out on. We need to fill up the 12-7 date first. I'm Ok with anything kids will eat for treats - bagels, granola bars, cookies, fruit, cakes, candy.... For the all day meets we'll need sandwiches to help fuel us through.

Turkey Meet

There is a meet in Waukesha, Wisconsin on November 22nd and 23rd. The first day is for High School fencers only and Sunday is an open meet, maybe Bob will fence it too. If you're in middle school you can fence the second day if you wish. We are considering taking a group to the meet. We would leave Friday after school and return Sunday after everyone is done fencing. Since we have to work on Monday we can't drive, it's just too exhausting, so we have a couple of options; We can get parents to drive or see how much it is to rent a small bus. I need to know by Sept. 12th if you'd like to go and your preferred driving arrangements so I can start making arrangements. This is not a SPA required event, it's a good warm up for the season and will give you a good idea of what to expect at Midwest this year.
You can look at askfred for more information and details.
Captains - please check around and make sure that everyone knows about this. Thanks!

USFA Membership

I hope you're having a great summer! At the banquet we talked about fencing USFA meets to give you more bouting time and more experience. To do this you must be a member of the USFA. The membership year starts in July, so you'll get the most for your money if you join now. In addition to being able to fence in USFA meets you'll also get a magazine. Just click on the link below and follow the instructions.
The SPA Invite in on January 18th (I think), if you like to submit a design for the t-shirt please do. This includes alumni fencers as well. It should be one color and on the front of the shirt. It should reference SPA in some way - maybe a fencing Spartan... I'm eager to see what you can come up with. I'd like the design by December 1st so you have some time = )

Team Banquet

Our team banquet is on March 5th at 6:00 in the Dining Hall. It will be catered by Boca Chica's again. We'll have fun team awards, awards for MVP's, MIP's, award the varsity letters and announce the team captains for next year. We hope to see everyone and their families there. Please RSVP and pay us (cash or check - you can make checks out to Jenni Blat) by February 26th, $15.00 per person.

Team Dinner before States Set-Up

We'll have a team dinner when we set up for States on February 22nd. We won't have practice but meet at the dining hall at 5:00 or 6:00 for a dinner of rigatoni, meatballs, salad, bread and desserts. If you choose to have dinner please pay me $10.00 by February 15th. Yes, you have a lot of time to forget to do this, I just wanted you to get it on your calendars. Make checks out to Jenni Blat. When we're done eating we'll go set up for States. (I'm not sure of the exact start time, it depends on the basketball team, I'll let you know when I know).

This Week

You all fenced well yesterday, we are very proud of all of you.
This meet helped us to see what we need to work on until States. We have a lot of work to do. We need to be much more focused in practice and work on the drills and spend less time playing around. It was very clear to us which fencers have been taking practice seriously and those who haven't based on the results. Bob and I are going to start giving individual lessons, this means we won't be able to watch you the entire time and make sure you're working. The choice is yours on how you want to spend your practice time, you can spend it goofing off or syou can pend it trying to be the best fencer you can be. As a coaches, we'll be focusing our efforts on the fencers who are working hard and taking practice seriously.
No practice on Monday - No school.
Practice Tuesday - Thursday. Even if one of these days is your day off, feel free to come!
Friday - 8 am leave for Midwest.
I noticed a lot of cameras taking picture of the event, if you could please get me the pictures, I'm planning on making a slide show of the season for the banquet.

Socks!

You must wear your SPA socks or else. (So, I still have to figure out what the or else is, Bob says, you won't compete, but we all know that I like to win.) I'll bring the socks for the new people to practice today. I have 8 pairs of new socks on sale for $10 each, so, if you can't find your socks, I'll be happy to sell you a pair!

I'll do the detailed report and indicators either Thursday or Sunday - too tired tonight, you know I'd make mistakes.
We were very impressed with your fencing this first meet. There were many pleasant surprise as well as a clearer picture of what we need to work on.
The meet MVP's are Phillip for doing his job and winning his two bouts to help lead the Men's Foil Team to victory and to the Women's Sabre squad who dominated the Roseville Team - Well Done. You'll also get your gear and certificates next week after this crazy tournament is over. Congratulations!
A couple of reminders: Get all your gear together and make sure it is working. I expect to see EVERYONE in their SPA socks this weekend. The shipment for the new socks came today and I will get them to you in the next few days.
Make sure you keep track of your gear at the meets, I came home with a jacket and three masks. Laura is missing her black and white nike shoes, please look in your bag for them. Try to keep your bag closed so stuff won't walk away or get mixed up.
Great job tonight - Thanks again to the Dougherty's for hosting dinner and to the families who brought drinks and snack today.
Good Luck to Grace Hartman and Jonathan Wald who are fencing in Atlanta this weekend.
M-T-R - Regular Squad Practices - Check with Bob P. and make sure all of your equipment works!
Wednesday - Meet against Roseville. Meet by Mr. Brown's office to board the bus to Roseville. Dinner at Dougherty's (about 1 mile away from the high school) right after the meet.
Snacks/Drinks are provided by:

Snacks – Marsha Schoenki

Drinks – Owens-Kurtz

Drinks – Vivian Johnson

Friday -January 18th - No practice - Set up for the SPA Invite around 7. It should take about an hour. Do/start your homework now, you won't have any time on Saturday to work on it.
Saturday-January 19th - SPA Invitational - Plan on being at SPA for most of the day. You'll need to be at SPA at least 45 minutes before your close of registration time which is listed below. Bring $10 for your entry fee and another $15 if you ordered a t-shirt when you registered. When you check in at the registration table bring your mask so it can get checked. You'll fence a pool of 5-7 fencers, 5 touch bouts first, then get seeded into a direct elemination table and then fence 15 touch bouts. Once you lose you are out in the 15 touch bouts. When you are done fencing hang around, cheer on your teammates. At the end of the day we need to clean up everything.
